5 Things To Know About: Big Magic

5 Things To Know About: Big Magic

1.  I finally, finally found Big Magic on the new releases shelf of my library.  Yay!  I'm very excited because I've wanted to write this book review for a while.  Big Magic (one of the best books to read on creativity) is written by Elizabeth Gilbert (author of Eat, Pray Love) and is a book about living a creative life and not letting anything get in the way.  The tagline even says 'creative living without fear', which is one of the main themes of the book.

2.  I'll be honest.  I never read Eat, Pray, Love or saw the movie so I really know nothing about Elizabeth Gilbert or her writing life. That being said, I enjoyed getting to read about her process for creating stories and novels and other things.

3.  I loved the example Elizabeth wrote about when she mentioned Harper Lee, author of To Kill A Mockingbird.  She explains about how Harper never wrote/published anything for the rest of her life and muses about the reasoning behind it, and that maybe it's because she was scared that whatever she would come up with might not be on the same caliber as To Kill a Mockingbird.

4.  Elizabeth has such an inspiring view on writing.  Don't write to get published.  Don't write to get fame.  Just write because you love it and because you have a story to tell.  That is such a good thing for me to hear as I continue taking my writing more seriously in 2016.

5.  This books is chock full of interesting stories, personal anecdotes, and writerly advice.  Elizabeth even says that she didn't write Big Magic for us, she wrote it for herself.  I can see how this is true and how it was very helpful for her to get all of this out!

If you are a creator of any sort, I think you will find this book inspiring.  I know I sure did.

Take care,
